New Hampshire 4000 Footer Scratch Off,48 peaks, Old Man of the Mountain, Hiking, Gift, New Hampshire 48, 4,000 Footers, (5 x 7 or 11 x 14) While it is certainly one of the most hiked mountains of the bunch, and the summit can be as crowded as your hometown bar the night before Thanksgiving, the hike up has so many awesome features, and you can see the climate and terrain change before your eyes. One time in the snow, and another time while experiencing fog so thick that anything outside of my 30 foot radius may as well not exist. It’s a high-reward, low-difficulty hike, and at the summit, you can see the higher peaks of the Presidentials teasing you from the north. The summit had beautiful views of the south, and we made friends with a couple of hungry gray jays! I don’t know if my little paragraph does justice for my ranking of Galehead at #4, but I remember having an absolute blast of a time on this hike, which is why it ranks so highly for me. The summit is mostly a wooded clearing, and while the bridges through the marsh are pretty cool, Zeacliff is really the only thing that pushes this peak out of the upper-40s. It’s just the middle of three mountains, with an unremarkable traverse to and from the summit. The rock-pile of a summit of Madison is beautiful, with views in all directions. Not an easy hike. Tom lacks any significant views, and the trail down and up from Field is unmemorable and bland. The entire ascent was pretty gentle, and the steep part wasn’t that steep. For those who haven’t been to Zeacliff, it’s absolutely incredible. The hike from North to South was kinda cool, with lots of deadfall and barren trees, giving it a spooky feeling. While I wasn’t as completely enamored with the views on West Bond as I was on the other two peaks, the entire 22 mile hike combined for such an engaging, challenging and spectacular experience, that this peak automatically gets a high ranking.
